CFFF Newsletter - December 13, 2023

Good Evening CFFF Friends, Family and Allies,

I hope this email finds you well. As you know the FEMA Town Hall has moved to ZOOM and will be 100% virtual due to inclement weather. Below are talking points to guide and inspire other questions, the letter that we sent to Washington DC, and the ZOOM Information.  Please find the talking points and ZOOM information and password below and the Letter to DC and FEMA flier attached below.

Here are some talking points that you all can use this evening if you feel like if they will guide you:

FEMA's Inefficacy of the Current Claims Process:

The current FEMA claims process is not working for victims of the Calf Canyon/Hermit's Peak Fire. The current claims process is not adequately addressing the needs of the victims, leaving them in a state of uncertainty and frustration.

Requesting Leadership and Process Changes at FEMA:

There needs to be changes to the FEMA claim’s office leadership and process.  Gladwell must be removed/reassigned.  There is an urgent need for changes in the leadership and overall process of the claims office. We firmly believe that Administrator Angela Gladwell must be removed or reassigned to ensure a more effective and empathetic approach.

FEMA needs to provide Compensation for both Economic and Non-Economic Damages:

Lives have been upended.  Families have been traumatized. Communities have been ravaged. Victims deserve fair compensation not only for economic losses but also for the non-economic damages they have endured, including emotional and psychological trauma.  The victims had no fault in the fire whatsoever.

FEMA's Compliance with Calf Canyon/Hermit's Peak Fire Legislation:

The victims deserve compensation for their non-economic damages.

The Calf Canyon/Hermit's Peak Fire legislation calls for New Mexico law to be followed and victims deserve to be made whole. The legislation pertaining to the Calf Canyon/Hermit's Peak Fire emphasizes adherence to New Mexico law. Victims have a right to see these legal provisions followed, and they deserve to be made whole as stipulated by the legislation.

Presidential Commitments:

The Biden-Harris Administration must make good on the President’s commitments to the victims of the HPCC fire by appointing someone who is not a bureaucrat and has a legal, historical and cultural knowledge of the State of New Mexico. We urge President Biden and the Biden-Harris Administration to fulfill the commitments made to the victims of the Calf Canyon/Hermit's Peak Fire. Appointing someone with legal, historical, and cultural knowledge specific to the State of New Mexico is crucial to ensuring a more informed and effective response.

It is our sincere hope that these talking points and work towards implementing necessary changes to alleviate the struggles faced by the victims will help drive our message to DC and bring back some much needed relief and change for Northern New Mexicans. We are open to further discussion and collaboration to achieve a resolution that is just and fair and we will not stop until justice is served.
