MEDIA UPDATE: Coalition for Fire Fund Fairness

Hello,

I hope this message finds you well. I am thrilled to share three significant media pieces published over the last couple of days that highlight critical issues affecting our community.

Albuquerque Journal Opinion—Hector Balderas

In a powerful opinion piece that ran in the Albuquerque Journal, former Attorney General Hector Balderas tackles the challenges facing New Mexico’s Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon fire victims. As Jay Mitchell, the new claims office administrator, begins his role this month, Balderas underscores the wholesale mismanagement in administrating relief and the urgent need for efficient and fair compensation processes for those affected by the disaster, which must include all damages allowed under New Mexico law.

KRQE—Toby Dolan

Marking the two-year anniversary of the Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon Fire, a KRQE News 13 investigation underscores the uphill battle survivors are facing with FEMA after losing everything. While visiting the devastated property that the family of fire victim Toby Dolan held for three generations, KRQE digs into the emotional toll that the fire has caused so many families as they fight for just compensation.

Taos News Podcast: Brian Colón

In a special series, Brian Colón joined Assistant Editor Geoffrey Plant to revisit the Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon Fire two years later. As a former State Auditor and current Managing Partner of Singleton Schreiber’s New Mexico office, Colón discusses the federal government’s dual failures regarding the fire.  First, the initiation of the fire, and second, FEMA’s failure to compensate its victims.
